The Story of Sandhya Chakma
Sandhya is 19, born and raised in the village of Tuichawng, Mizoram and comes from a loving and close-knit family. She is the 2nd youngest of 4 sisters and has one younger brother. Her mother and father work hard to support the family by growing and selling their crops. Sandhya shows promise as a student and is supported by her family for her schooling. Her mother notes that Sandhya loves to study and can alway be found with school books, constantly trying to improve her English and math skills.
Rather shy and reserved, Sandhya has a deep caring for others and has focused her Class 11 area of study to the science stream with a dream of becoming a nurse “because there are no nurses in our village.” Her village is very remote and lacks many basic services such as reliable power & healthcare facilities. Villagers must travel far from home to get their illnesses treated and Sandhya wishes to improve this condition once she becomes a registered nurse.
Apart from her deep concern for her people, the sweet natured Sandhya also loves to offer her help around the kitchen at the girl’s hostel. She is well-liked and appreciated by the hostel warden and owner. When Sandhya is around, you can always expect to receive a helping hand.
Sandhya is a model of perseverance and focus making up for her missing years of basic education. She often wakes up early and stays up late to study. As of now, her marks are still below passing standard; however, taking her previous village education into consideration, this young lady is doing a fantastic job of catching up. She is a kind, thoughtful, hard working, and open to learning new knowledge.
